Advancing Research Through Wharton WRDS

Wharton Research Data Services (WRDS) was first launched in 1998 through the Computing and Information Technology department to give students, researchers and businesses a comprehensive web-based data management platform. Today, WRDS is a central tool for intelligence research in finance, economics and marketing in over 29 countries. Users total over 30,000 corporate, non-profit and academic clients. The tool was picked up after licensure by over 200 business schools and academic institutions, including Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, Stanford University, Harvard University, London Business School, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and INSEAD. Not only does WRDS establish The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania as a key player in financial research and information technology; it also proves the school’s dedication to fostering a global community and sharing of resources for better results.

One of the chief advantages of WRDS is its flexibility. WRDS offers several data delivery platforms to be used including Web interface, WRDS Cloud, and PC SAS Connect. Information on WRDS can be processed and retrieved at high speeds of 400MB per second. WRDS data is organized from many independent, high-quality databases including Thomas Reuters, Dow Jones, Bank Regulatory, Capital IQ, Hedge Fund Research, and FactSet. Data compiled in WRDS includes balance sheets, income statements, analyst estimates, international economics, banking industry conditions, stock price bid and ask quotes, and executive compensation.

To facilitate research efforts for a wide range of users, from the experienced academic researcher to the first-time company researcher, WRDS support offers several forums to make the WRDS interface customer friendly and easy-to-use. The WRDS Community opens a group forum for customers to share information, research tips, and sample scripts with fellow users. Video tutorials, live chats, research guides and vendor manuals are also available for use, making WRDS a powerful interface for strategic development and the most up-to-date research.
