INSEAD’s Global Private Equity Initiative

Private equity in developed countries has produced a substantial amount of wealth and affluence in the recent past. INSEAD’S Global Private Equity Initiative (GPEI) partners private equity limited partners (LPs) and general partners (GPs) in developing, less developed, and fully developed countries with the intention of expanding research and outreach activities in the name of the private equity model into these areas. The core areas of research by GPEI include examining critical issues to building private equity in developing nations, investigating industry demand patterns, and developing cutting-edge insight into the private equity industry. Because INSEAD already has a global presence with campuses in Europe, the Middle East and Asia, the school is uniquely positioned to bring this initiative to fruition.

As a relatively new initiative, first launched in August of 2009, GPEI has combined its extensive research abilities with alumni in private equity and professionals in private equity. The result has been an interest from several major private equity companies who have since supported GPEI with generous funding. GPEI partners and supporters include The Abraaj Group, General Atlantic, The Boston Consulting Group, and PricewaterhouseCoopers. In addition to these core supporters, GPEI has found research partners in the Asian Venture Capital Journal, Dow Jones, and Prequin. In return for their support, these companies receive benefits from GPEI’s work that include access to unbiased research on private equity, greater exposure, a reliable and safe platform to exchange ideas, and involvement with high-profile events.

INSEAD students gain access to the world of private equity and GPEI’s research through courses in MBA, EMBA, and Executive Education programs. Over 70% of MBAs take two or more private equity courses during their tenure at INSEAD, which includes courses such as Venture-, Growth- & Buy-out Investing or Private Equity Finance. Additionally, GPEI holds several benchmark events that are attended by academics, students, researchers, professionals, investors, and private equity ventures. Annual events include the INSEAD Private Equity Conference Europe, the Annual Southeast Asia Summit, the Asian Venture Capital Journal Singapore Forum, and the SuperReturn Asia Conference. Each of these events focuses on the investigation of private equity in a different region to investigate value creation, opportunities for growth in private equity,  strategic partnerships, and learning to manage expectations.

Though GPEI is a growing initiative involving many faculty members, it is led by Claudia Zeisberger, Affiliate Professor of Decision Sciences and Academic Director of GPEI, and Michael Prahl, Centre Director of GPEI – both of whom are based in Singapore.
