The Emory 2013-2014 Application

Goizueta Business School at Emory University has steadily risen in rankings and reputation throughout the past several years. This year, they have released an application for the Class of 2016 that follows the trend of other top business schools by cutting the number of required essays and shortening the overall application length. Below, we will highlight some of the key areas of the application for the 2013-2014 cycle.

2013-2014 Admissions Deadlines

The Goizueta admissions deadlines will be as follows:

           Round 1: Applications due October 11, 2013*

*Deadline for early decision

           Round 2: Applications due November 20, 2013**

**Preferred deadline for 1-year MBA applicants and international applicants

            Round 3: Applications due January 10, 2014***

***Final deadline for merit-based scholarships

           Round 4: Applications due March 14, 2014

Essay Requirements

This year, Goizueta has eliminated its question from previous years asking applicants to share a “significant accomplishment” and instead has slightly reworded last year’s questions and shortened the word count significantly. All applicants are required to complete four essay questions, as outlined below:

Essay 1: Complete each of the following questions. Please limit your response to 200 words.

– What is your short-term career goal and why is an MBA from Goizueta an important next step toward that goal?

– If your initial career plans are not realized, what else are you considering?

Essay 2: The Business School is named for Roberto C. Goizueta, former Chairman and CEO of The Coca-Cola Company, who led the organization for 16 years, extending its global reach, quadrupling consumption, building brand responsibility, and creating unprecedented shareholder wealth. It is his legacy and the strength of his character that gives rise to our vision: Principled Leaders for Global Enterprise. How will you contribute to and make a lasting impact on the Goizueta Business School community as a student or alumnus? Please limit your response to 300 words.

Essay 3: Complete one of the following statements. Please limit your response to 250 words.

– I am unique because…

– My most memorable cross-cultural experience…

– I am passionate about…

– The best piece of advice I’ve ever received is…

Essay 4: In 25 words or less, please share with the committee and your future classmates an interesting or fun fact about you.

The Goizueta essay prompts are unique in that they allow applicants to explore a wide range of writing styles and project different angles of one’s candidacy to the admissions board. For instance, Essay 2, which asks how the applicant will make a lasting impact at Goizueta, might solicit something similar to a recruitment pitch, whereas Essay 3 and Essay 4 give more room for creative writing so that the admissions committee gets a multi-angled look at applicants from both a professional and personal perspective.

Reapplicants are required to answer only two essay questions: Essay 1 (above) and a separate essay prompt open only to reapplicants, which can be found at http://goizueta.emory.edu/degree/fulltimemba/admissions/essays.html.

Finally, there is also an Optional Essay prompt, which allows applicants to explain any extenuating circumstances (limited to 250 words) that may affect their candidacy, such as gaps in work experience, a lower-than-ideal GPA or GMAT score, or having not used a current supervisor for a letter of recommendation.

Submitting a Resume

The Goizueta online application will allow applicants to upload a one- to two-page resume. In addition to this, applicants will be required to add work experience into the Goizueta live application, listing items including employer, starting and ending title, salaries, bonuses, responsibilities, and reason for leaving (if applicable).

Reporting GMAT/GRE Scores

Goizueta requires that applicants report all GMAT and GRE scoresnot just the highest score. If you have taken the test multiple times, all official scores must be sent to the Goizueta admissions office.

Required Information from the Online Application

In addition to the reporting biographical information, listing a program of interest, and reporting education, work experience, test scores, and extracurricular activities, the online applicants asks applicants to report on a section entitled “Additional Information”, which will require that applicants include the following information:
