The Kenan-Flagler 2013-2014 Application
Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina has made live its online application for the Class of 2016. The Kenan-Flagler application has remained largely unchanged from last year, asking the standard essay questions used in previous years and leaving the creativity up to the applicant. Below are aspects of the application of which to take note.
2013-2014 Application Deadlines
The deadlines for the 2013-2014 application cycle will be as follows:
Round 1: Applications due October 18, 2013*
*Deadline for early decision
Round 2: Applications due December 9, 2013
Round 3: Applications due January 13, 2014
Round 4: Applications due March 14, 2014
Essay Requirements
Kenan-Flagler’s essay prompts have remained unchanged from previous years, requiring all applicants to respond to three required 500-word essay prompts, and providing two optional essay prompts. The essay topics for the 2013-2014 application cycle appear below.
- Essay One (Required) What are the 2 or 3 strengths or characteristics that have driven your career success thus far? What are the other strengths that you would like to leverage in the future? (500 words maximum)
- Essay Two (Required) Please describe your short and long term goals post-MBA. Explain how: your professional experience has shaped these goals; why this career option appeals to you; and how you arrived at the decision that now is the time and the MBA is the appropriate degree. (500 words maximum)
- Essay Three (Required) What personal qualities or life experiences distinguish you from other applicants? How do these qualities or experiences equip you to contribute to UNC Kenan-Flagler? (500 words maximum)
- Essay Four (Optional) If your standardized test scores are low, or if you have not had coursework in core business subjects (calculus, microeconomics, statistics, financial accounting), please tell us how you plan to prepare yourself for the quantitative rigor of the MBA curriculum. (300 words maximum)
- Essay Five (Optional) Is there any other information you would like to share that is not presented elsewhere in the application? (300 words maximum)
While Essay 1 and Essay 2 are more professionally driven questions asking about career-relevant skills and goals, Essay 3 delves deeper into applicants’ personality characteristics and gives candidates an opportunity to differentiate themselves through a creative aspect. Additionally, each of these prompts must be answered in 500 words (approximately one page of single-spaced writing), meaning that applicants are given a good amount of space to explain and defend their topic — whereas many other business schools this year require respondents to answer in much less space, anywhere from as little as 25 words to 250 words.
Submitting a Resume
The Kenan-Flagler online application will allow applicants to upload a personalized resume, which should include employment and education history. Resumes can be one to two pages in length – although in the past the Kenan-Flagler admissions board has explicitly stated that they expect resumes to be one page in length.
Scheduling an Interview
It is the responsibility of all applicants to schedule their own interview using the online interview scheduler. Applicants will have access to the online interview scheduler once the online application is submitted with an uploaded resume included and the $145 application fee is paid. An interview must be scheduled before the appropriate deadline in order to be eligible for admission. Interview deadlines can be found at the following link: http://www.kenan-flagler.unc.edu/admissions/mba/application-deadlines.
Other Required Information
In addition to submitting a resume, applicants are expected to complete a separate work history section in the online application, including information such as job title, salary, and bonus amount. Applicants also have the option to list a concentration, enrichment, and focus area, as well as list the industry wishing to be entered into upon graduation. The Kenan-Flagler application will also require unofficial transcripts from all institutions attended; a valid GRE or GMAT score (only the highest score needed); a TOEFL, PTE, or IELTS score for international applicants; two letters of recommendation submitted through the online application (preferably from two supervisors); and a residency form for North Carolina residents only.
