The Stern (NYU) Executive MBA Program

Many senior managers, executives and entrepreneurs look to New York University’s Stern Executive MBA (EMBA) program for their first-choice EMBA. The reason for this is easy to see: First, Stern’s location in the heart of New York City provides a central location — for many, a location that is either close to the hub of their business, that provides networking access to partnering businesses, or that is close to influential NYU alumni. Second, Stern is known for having a strong emphasis on research, which means that the faculty is responsive, receptive, and up-to-date on the most recent events in the domestic and global marketplaces. Finally, the structure of Stern’s EMBA program allows students to continue their careers while also obtaining an MBA degree from one of the nation’s top business schools.

In the Stern EMBA, students meet on Fridays and Saturdays every other week at NYU’s Manhattan campus over the course of 22 months, taking courses such as Professional Responsibility, Global Economy, and Communication for Teams and Leaders. Stern EMBAs can also choose to specialize in any of seven concentrations, including Quantitative Finance, Entrepreneurship & Innovation, or Global Business. Additionally, as an EMBA student, Stern grants access to additional courses, including those taken by part-time students and courses taught through NYU’s School of Law, School of Public Service, School of Continuing and Professional Studies, or the Entertainment, Media, and Technology Program.

In addition to the academic areas of the curriculum, Stern focuses its students on experiential learning and real-world skills. Stern EMBA students are required to attend Global Study Tours, carefully designed to focus Stern EMBAs on relevant market trends. Stern EMBA students are required to attend three one-week residencies – two of which must be abroad. Tours in the past have ranged from Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. While abroad, students are able to interact on an in-depth level with government institutions, industry leaders, and financial organizations. Generally, for the second tour, faculty and administration choose a culture and market that is markedly different from the first tour to make sure that students are exposed to and able to embrace a diverse range of market industries.

Lastly, to ensure that students are able to remain a work-life balance, only two courses are taken at a time. This way, students can maximize their attention on focused areas of study while being able to apply their knowledge to their work in real time.

So, what does the average Stern EMBA student look like? These professionals have an average of 14 years of work experience; however, only a minimum of six years work experience is required for admission. Applicants are experienced professionals with a working knowledge of managerial practices and business successes.
