UCLA Anderson Partners with TED
On February 27, 2012, UCLA Anderson School of Management became the first business school to partner with the non-profit inspiration tank for thinkers and doers, TED. TED became world-known through its Ideas Worth Spreading, enlisting the world’s top speakers and thinkers to voice their ideas through talks which are made available for free online at TED.com. TED speakers have included Al Gore, Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, and Philippe Starck, to name a few.
The partnership, deemed a “partnership to advance ideas”, will build on their geographical proximity through a UCLA “TED Takeover”, a 4-day on-campus event to fully submerge Anderson students into the TED idea-sharing experience. The event will host an idea lounge, where students are invited and encouraged to build, collaborate, and share innovations. Students are urged to contribute opinion through social media, or through less popular methods such as writing notes on Post-its or napkins, which will then be sent to TED headquarters. A six-person panel made of originals, revolutionaries, and top innovators will prompt discussion and openness of thought. After the conclusion of the 4-day conference, students will continue dialogue and discourse with TED to help culminate the many ideas spurred at the conference.
Last year’s TED Takeover was divided into twelve sessions over four days, featuring a wide range of thinkers including roboticists, statisticians, peace activists, banjo players and neuroscientists. The conference was hosted by TED curator, Chris Anderson; Executive Producer of TED Media, June Cohen; and European Director of TED, Bruno Giussani. This first annual conference represented what is hoped to be a long-lasting, productive and provoking relationship between UCLA and TED.
UCLA Anderson students were also able to contribute at the 2012 TEDActive conference in Palm Springs, take an active role at the annual TED conference in Long Beach, and through other TEDActive projects that partner with world-renowned corporations such a HP, TOMS shoes, and American Express. One such event was the TED Annual Case Challenge held in May 2012. Teams used information given from the TEDActive Giving Project to put forward a proposition for sustainable giving initiatives, as sponsored by TOMS shoes. The winners, Team GifTED, proposed the idea of retailers partnering with favored charities to continue ongoing community contributions. Team GifTED, composed of four first-year Anderson MBAs, won a cumulative prize of $10,000, an internship with TED, and a pair of sunglasses and shoes from TOMS.
